Royce, I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. Just a year or two a go I got to visit with your mom and dad during one of their visits to Montgomery. I have such fond memories of your family living behind us in Auburn. You and your family are in my prayers.
Powerful and profound thoughts, Royce! Your dad was a formative professor in my early education as a college student, and I always respected him and your family.
Thanks for this beautiful column. My dad is 89 and had become a recluse in “independent living,” totally dependent on my sister. We finally got him into assisted living, and he is thriving. He is back to “living” as opposed to surviving. In a weird sort of way, my brother and I are trying to get my sister to re-engage. Life is, indeed, for the living.
What a wonderful, and wise, piece Royce. And I’m so sorry for the loss of your father. If you haven’t heard it, I might recommend the song “Life’s for the living” by Passenger.
Royce, I very much liked and agreed with what you wrote. I could tell by your Dad’s obituary that you were a prolific writer. Charles was only a month older me. We went to school and church together before they moved to Oak Ridge. Your Mother was a childhood friend and was a bridesmaid in our wedding. I send to you and your family love and prayers. Beautiful words, Royce --condolences about your father. Often someone’s legacy is only apparent when we don’t have them with us anymore. Glad you and your dad got the chance to talk about it while he was still here.
Great reflections. Thank you for sharing. We enjoyed being neighbors with them on Mill Street.

Thanks so much, Sam.
I have daughters with great taste, so I do know that song!
